This guide shows you how to unlock Agent Smith by conquering the Rifts, special challenges where you and your friends team up to fight waves of enemies. Each Rift has its own story and unique enemies; you’ll never get bored. At the end of each Rift, you’ll face a tough boss battle.
The Rifts come in different difficulty levels, so you can challenge yourself and get better as you play. The harder the difficulty, the more points you get towards unlocking Agent Smith. Are you ready to bend the rules of the MultiVersus world and play as the villain everyone loves to hate?
Who’s Agent Smith?
Remember Agent Smith from the Matrix movies? That’s the guy! He’s a computer program gone rogue, which means he’s a super-smart program that’s not following the rules anymore. In the movies, he wants to take over the world and turn everyone into programs like him, trapping them in a fake reality. He can copy himself and take over other people’s bodies, which makes him super creepy and hard to stop.
In MultiVersus, he’ll be a tough opponent to fight. He might be able to copy himself to fight you multiple times, or he could even take over one of your teammates! If you can unlock him, you’ll be the one in control of this powerful villain.
How to Unlock Agent Smith
There’s a special event in the game called “Beat the Rifts, Get Agent Smith Free!” Here’s what to do:
- Battle in the Rifts: Rifts are like special challenges where you and your friends fight bad guys together. Each Rift has different difficulty levels, like Easy or Hard. Imagine fighting your way through a spooky graveyard on Easy, then facing off against a fire-breathing dragon on Hard!
- Beat Bosses, Earn Points: This is the cool part: Every time you defeat the final bad guy (boss) in a Rift on a new difficulty for the first time, you get points towards unlocking Agent Smith. Let’s say you beat the boss in the graveyard Rift on Easy. You won’t get points for beating that same boss on Easy again. But if you go back and beat the boss on Medium, that counts as a new victory, and you’ll get more points! Keep working your way up through the difficulty levels in each Rift to earn the most points.
Things to Remember:
- Agent Smith Not Here Yet: As of June 2nd, 2024, you can’t play as Agent Smith yet. You can still start working on unlocking him by beating the Rifts.
- Be Patient: There aren’t enough Rifts out yet to unlock Agent Smith completely this way. The developers haven’t said exactly when he’ll be playable, but the event lets you unlock him a bit faster if you beat the Rifts early.
- Extra Hard Difficulty Coming Soon: Keep an eye out for a new difficulty called “Looney” coming to the Rifts on July 10th, 2024. Beating bosses on this hardest difficulty will get you the most points towards Agent Smith.
Tips for Beating the Rifts
If you wait for Agent Smith, here are some tips to win the Rifts and get those points:
- Team Up: Play with friends or other fighters! Talking to each other helps you win battles.
- Pick Good Fighters: Choose characters that work well together. Some fight from far away, some are strong close up, and some can heal your team.
- Upgrade Your Fighters: Play with your characters to make them stronger and unlock special tricks.
- Don’t Give Up: If you lose a Rift, try again! Learn what went wrong and try a different strategy.

The “Beat the Rifts, Get Agent Smith Free!” event gives you more than just Agent Smith! Here’s what else you can win:
- Special Agent Smith Skin: By playing the Rifts, you can unlock a cool new outfit for Agent Smith that no one else will have!
